John Mallinson Youth Band aims to promote music education and provide performance opportunities to young musicians.

Since 2009, JMYB has been operating as a welcoming, not-for-profit community band for brass, wind and percussion players. We are a symphonic ensemble whose wide repertoire also includes original compositions by band members, as we strive to give everyone the opportunity to extend their musical abilities.

While we serve predominantly as a band for school-aged and young adult musicians, we welcome members of all ages, with a preferred minimum skill level of AMEB Grade 5 or equivalent.

Rehearsals are held weekly on Saturday afternoons (2pm - 5pm) during the school term, in the City of Whitehorse area. For more information on joining us, please visit our Contact page.

Our Conductor - Joseph Yu

Joseph Yu is a professional conductor and trombone player specialising in solo and ensemble performance. He has taught brass instruments and certain woodwind instruments at schools across Melbourne, including Camberwell Girls Grammar School and Mount Waverley Secondary College. Recently he has also worked with Dr. Robert Ambrose from University of Georgia to launch a band-conducting summer school in Hong Kong, in which he has enjoyed success as a conducting teacher. He was also one of the artistic faculty of the SliderAsia trombone festival in Hong Kong, and performed in a recital featuring music written for trombone and organ. Joseph enjoys inspiring younger generations through performance and teaching, to help them realise their musical potential. He is also passionate in the world band movement and is keen in training musicians, both players and conductors alike, who are inspired by such musical media.
